Tunnels under Helsinki

Under downtown Helsinki is a system of tunnels forming an underground mall, connecting the central train station and Rautatientori ("railroad square"), Kirjatori ("book square"), Forum (a multistory mall), Stockmann (a two block department store), and places in between. Underground stores from each of these places also form parts of the tunnel system. You can buy food, books, clothes, flowers, music, get to the trains, busses, and metro, see buskers perform, all without going above ground (well, except for the busses).

See also my main Helsinki photos page.

Signs point the way to the places the tunnels connect...

Exits to Mannherheimintie and the bus station in the tunnel between Rautatientori and Forum The start of that same tunnel, looking from Rautatientori's underground mall The lonely tunnel leading from Stockmann to Forum

Musicians usually play in this space in the tunnel mall, near the train station entrance. A boy was skateboarding here in the main "courtyard" of the Rautatientori underground mall, which is two stories deep.

Sokos supermarket is attached to the tunnel between Rautatientori and the bus station exits. We went to this supermarket almost every day we were in Helsinki, and usually bought some of these pastries.

The below-ground portion of Forum, connected to the tunnels, is a food court with several restaurants and a supermarket.

« "Southern Fried Chicken"? Hmmm...

(This one is located in the Forum food court)
