Photographs from Helsinki

last updated 2004-06-09

These are from March 2002. Esther and I spent two weeks in Helsinki. We stayed with Erin McMullen, a friend working on a research fellowship at the University of Helsinki for one year. See also the photos of Tallinn that I took during our short trip to Tallinn, Estonia while we were staying in Helsinki, as well as the separate page of photos of the Helsinki tunnels.

Sunrise in Pasila -
the view from Erin's apartment in the exchange student building

The main Helsinki train station, in downtown, is a 5 minute ride from Pasila
insideoutsideother side

« Rautatientori ("Railroad Square")

The view from in front of the train station.

You can see the tram stop, and the art museum.

Beneath the train station and nearby city blocks is a system of tunnels...

A mall in the middle of a city block, between Keskuskatu and Mannerheimintie at Aleksanderinkatu - very near the train station.

Both of the tunnel entrances pictured to the left are in this block.

I took a lot of pictures in the tunnels, you can see them on a separate page

« Stockmann, apparently the largest department store in the Nordic countries, occupies two city blocks between Aleksanderinkatu and Pohjoisesplanadi, at Keskuskatu ("center street"). The tunnels connect Stockmann to the train station, another mall called Forum, and other places.

« Tram stops and the Finnish Bookstore
at the corner of Aleksanderinkatu and Mannerheimintie

The central bus station, a large city block on the opposite side of Mannerheimintie, between Simonkatu and Salomonkatu.

« A view of the bus station from Salomonkatu

This building at the bus station
appears to have my name on it... »

Temppeliaukio, the site of the famous stone church.

The church was blasted out of the inside of a large rock, so most of the church lies in a circular artificial "cave", with a small wall and large copper dome above ground. Both of these photos are taken from on top of the rock, which serves as a park and the site of a playground.

I didn't take any pictures inside the church, but many others have:

  • Helsinki tourist office rock church page
  • Muuka.Com - churches
  • PhotoWeb: Temppeliaukio Church

  • A few miscellaneous photos around the downtown area...

From Arkadiankatu, looking across Rautatiekatu at Tennispalatsi, a large building housing movie theaters, small shops, and an art "museum" - actually a large exhibit gallery. We saw Fellowship of the Ring at the theater there, and we saw an exhibit on photographer Lee Miller in the art museum.

The view from the stairs at Senaatintori ("Senate Square")

I don't remember where this is, but it's not far from Digelius.

Posti, the post office building, is on the right.

The tall metallic building on the left is Kiasma modern art museum.

Sanomatalo, home of Helsinki's main newspaper, is in the background.
