Photographs from Tallinn, Estonia

During a visit to Finland in March 2002, Esther and I hopped a ferry to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, for a few days. We just wandered around the tourist-filled old town the whole time we were there. See also my photos of Helsinki.

« We wandered by this view on our first afternoon, a couple of blocks from where we were staying. The tower in the background is one of the tallest fortified towers of the old city wall, and is now a museum. It is named "Kiek in de Kook". The aerial view of the old town is from the Kiek windows, where apparently many pigeons like to roost:

The Kiek in de Kook front door.
In the background, you can see Aleksandr Nevsky Cathedral, on Toompea Hill.

In the basement floor at Kiek in the Kook, there was an exhibit of work by a wonderful photographer

An opening in the old town wall:

a wool clothes market along the old city wall on Müürivahe

We encountered plenty of strange graffitti in Tallin.
The second of these photos is in the spiral staircase at Kiek in de Kook.

In the town square is a church, with a spotlight on the roof to illuminate the steeple at night.
I wandered through the town square at night, when it was overcast and misty out...

Finally, possibly the strangest thing we saw in Tallinn:

If you can't see what's so strange about it,
try looking in the lower right corner of this
brighter version of the photo.
