Illusions of High School

  Almost everyone she has ever met remembers her, yet if you ask them,
none will claim to be her friends.  If you tell them this, they will
all be surprised.  "I thought you two were very close!" one would say
to the other.  "And I thought you were," the reply might be.
  If you met her you would understand the feeling.  As she floated
through the air, she would capture your attention.  As she passed you
she would smile, one of those warm, inviting smiles that really mean
nothing.  Then she would float by you.  Perhaps you would be struck by
her beauty.
  Her body has a sense of softness and luxury about it, almost as if
someone could sink in and be lost.  Her pale white face, well
designed, is almost captivating.  Her eyes, a sparkling blue, always
seem to be open wide.  And her mane of pale hair is a step above what
the shampoo ads ever attain.  Her arms are thin and delicate, and,
like the rest of her, appear to float as if weightless.
  From the side she looks thin, like a ribbon in the breeze.  Only the
hair appears to have volume.  In manned she is casual and detached.
So detached that one can imagine she could have sex and barely notice
it.  I met her once while eating lunch with some friends.  She floated
over and melted in a chair, flashing a smile momentarily.  Everyone
reacted to her as if they were longtime pals, and I gather that each
thought the others were.
  As we talked she occasionally dropped in remarks, those pointless
remarks we sometimes make when speaking about nothing in particular.
Sometimes she elicited a giggle from the group, and for a brief
instant she smiled along with us.  Her voice was soft and smooth.
After a while, I noticed it was somewhat high.  Above all, it was
flowing, melting into the surroundings.
  Does she have any friends?  Her manner, so war and cordial on the
surface, in fact forbids one from getting any closer than a companion.
What are her thoughts and feelings?  If one probed deeper into her
mind, I wonder what strange secrets would be revealed.  I wonder
whether she even knows.
