14 July 1989 Constitution of the Brookline High School Strategic Games Club Drafted by Ofer Inbar, Dictator a) This will supersede the John Kumpf constitution of 1988/89, the first known SGC constitution. b) The basic purpose of this constitution is not to secure order; it is to supersede the Kumpf constitution. c) This constitution will not conform to some rules of constitution writing. This is because the SGC is basically not conformist in nature.* The BHS SGC is a constitutional dictatorship (yes, that is a contradiction). The dictator, being dictator, can change or get rid of the constitution, but this is not recommended. Any dictator who tries to change the parts marked with asterisks risks the wrath of ex-dictators. The purpose of the SGC is to play strategic and role-playing games and to have fun. AD&D and Diplomacy are the mainstays of the club.* The 1967 Diplomacy set is the SGC's primary treasure and must be defended at all costs! Some other possible games: Roleplaying Strategic *AD&D (NOT D&D) *Diplomacy *Chaos *Ogre/GEV Rolemaster Car Wars Cyberpunk Illuminati Killer Amoeba Wars Call of Cthulu Axis & Allies Toon Go Paranoia King of the Tabletop / Kings'n'Things GURPS Chess any Palladium system game any Avalon Hill game Official Titles (Positions) I) Dictator* See next section. Should be a senior if possible. II) Whip In charge of informing members of activities and getting them to come. Must keep the SGC active. III) Treasurer Basically a ceremonial title without much to do; but here are the duties anyway: Keep track of the treasury and inventory of games. Guard the treasury. Keep records. (see section about the treasury) IV) Vice Dictator Second in command, but not automatically the successor to the dictator. Succession is discussed in the section about the dictatorship. V) Holder of the 1967 Diplomacy Must guard it with his life. Very prestigious. VI) Enforcer (optional position) Dictator's henchman. VII) Publicist In charge of finding new members. VIII) Ambassadors SGC members who go to other schools. They represent the SGC there, and are also the Publicists and Whips for their schools if necessary. IX) ex-Dictator Protect the asterisks. Be a destabilizing influence. X) Member Play games. Note: Only the dictator has real power (officially). The Dictatorship a) The dictator is supreme ruler of the SGC and holds all authority. b) As dictator, the dictator may nullify any part of the constitution, and this includes a) above. (however, see introduction) c) The dictator appoints positions and confers titles. d) The dictator should keep the SGC healthy and active. e) The dictator's locker is an important part of the club.* f) The dictator should give the locker number and combination to several trusted club members. g) Dictator should keep at least a set of dice in the locker. h) Other possibilities for the locker are games, notes, club schedules, hex sheets, more dice, etc. i) The dictator may, upon leaving BHS, transfer power peacefully, but this is not recommended.* j) The normal way to transfer power is by a coup. This should not be done tooo often. (sic) k) If the dictator wishes to amend the constitution, he should get at least 3 signatures, including at least 2 upperclassmen. However, see b) above. l) A dictator must hold power for at least a month in order to claim ex- Dictator status. Membership a) The basic criterion for membership is that the person want to play AD&D or Diplomacy (exceptions allowed). b) There are two classes of members: Upperclassmen: Juniors and Seniors Underclassmen: Freshmen and Sophomores Those not in high school are considered upperclass if they have been members for over two years. c) The dictator must be an upperclassman.* d) There should be at least 10 members. e) There should be at least 3 underclassmen (to protect the SGC's future). f) There should be at least 1 girl. g) If d, e, or f are violated, the club is in a state of membership crisis. It is the responsibility of the Dictator and Publicist to salvage the club by finding more members and satisfying d, e, and f. Cards a) The club will print membership cards. b) All members and ex-members may have cards, which they may use to get discounts at The Compleat Strategist. c) Members banished by the Dictator will have their cards revoked. If they refuse, they are renegades. Room a) The SGC plays and meets in BHS room 261.* b) The Dictator should get rights to this room from the administration for as many days of the week as possible. This should be done early in the year. Legends a) It is important to keep SGC legends alive. b) The main legend is Sterling Newbury.* c) Other legendary figures are Sid Probstein, Lee Jerberg, Newbury's hat, FUBAR, and ex-dictators Dave Louie, Brian Henderson, John Kumpf. d) Members should explore the mystery of the first SGC. e) It is not necessary to write down legendary details on paper. Word of mouth is fine, and things might get more interesting (embellished) that way. General a) Silence rules and other game procedures are up to the ref/DM/GM. b) Members should contribute to the treasury, which should consist mostly of pennies*. c) Contribution of games or gaming equipment is always appreciated. d) Ex-members are always welcome.* e) The cat is the official favorite animal of the SGC. f) Activities are important. g) Chaos is important. (entropy; not the game) h) The SGC is an equal opportunity club. i) The SGC is a democracy only when the dictator says so. j) Any member may hold multiple titles. k) All ninjas holding twigs are assumed to be bushes. l) Trust the Computer Serve the Computer The Computer is Your Friend. Constitution Day is hereby declared 14 July, to coincide with the bicentennial of Bastille Day. The constitution was actually drafted 13Jul89, but was dated 14Jul89 by mistake. This convenient mistake will not be corrected. Be Mean To Bis Day is hereby declared 21 January.
